Our version of Enjoy the Silence is inspired by Martin Gore's original "demo" recording for voice and piano, which closely resembles a ballad, and is markedly different from the final version that appears on the Depeche Mode album Violator. We also adopted varying degrees of flexible tempo to highlight each of the song's sections. Vocal delivery is indebted to Baroque performance practice—in fact, since we are also playing various songs by John Dowland, we decided to treat the song's imagery as an extension of Elizabethan text painting and let our performance be influenced by the stylistic conventions of the late 16th century. The use of the harpsichord's lowest registers imparts a richer, darker quality to the overall atmosphere—another reference to Elizabethan aesthetics.
