This edit has been a labor of mine since about April 2022, just after "Melt My Eyez See Your Future" dropped. I was supposed to up this on November 4th in time for the 10th anniversary of Steven Universe's premiere on Cartoon Network, but life (and, you know, procrastination) got in the way. Better late than never!
Zel himself has said that Melt My Eyez is his current greatest work, but it's unfortunate that it was slept on compared to many of his other projects. Personally, it's my current favorite album, even almost 2 years later. It really came to me at a pivotal time in my life, where I felt so spiritually & emotionally conflicted. The final track, "The Ills", was especially powerful for me, & not just because of its classic '90s jazz rap sound, but because it touched on so many spiritual, esoteric, & even occult topics. It inspired me to look beyond myself, not so much to change too many of my fundamental beliefs, but to push myself to come to a deeper understanding of the beliefs of others.
This video was also a great opportunity to do what literally no one else would ever think of... combining Denzel Curry & Steven Universe. 😂 But of course, what with me being the resident SU fanboy of my community. Highkey, this is probably the single best song from Zel that would ever have a chance of working with it, as the themes & jazzy vibes work flawlessly together with that of the show.
I would've gone on a long rant about how I became a fan of SU, but it would've been more appropriate if this had dropped when it was supposed to 😅 That and, well, ain't nobody got time to read all that. Shoot I'm surprised you're reading this now! That must mean you care even a little. Or maybe you're like me & have too much time on your hands...
