In his Republic, and through the mouth of Socrates, Plato warns of the exaltation of the freedom of choice over and above all other goods in a democratic society and how the very notion of freedom becomes distorted in the process. This distortion ultimate leads to anarchy in the soul and to a kind of tyranny of the passions. Anthony explains the classical and biblical understand of freedom and then contrasts it with the modern notion of freedom that has replaced it in modern liberal democracies.
