Part of the Northern Forest, the Smithills Estate in Bolton is a hub for community engagement and provides an urban-fringe woodland accessible to the public from Greater Manchester and beyond.
One of the longest-standing groups is the dementia-friendly walks, which are run in collaboration with City of Trees. The sessions aim to improve the wellbeing of the attendees, including increased access to nature and social benefits. This project provides a case study for how community engagement could be replicated and expanded to improve wellbeing for those suffering with dementia across the Northern Forest and beyond.
