Delta Flight 1859 was climbing out of New York JFK for San Juan when the pilots reported a fuel leak and declared an emergency.
As the Airbus A321neo headed back toward JFK, the situation became even more serious when the crew reported fumes in the cockpit and told controllers they had gone on oxygen.
The pilots were also preparing for an overweight landing and advised ATC that they would not be using thrust reversers because of the fuel leak — meaning they were expecting extremely hot brakes after touchdown.
