What first inspired the composition of this fugue in 1985, was the rhythmic similarity (in the dotted rhythms) between Henry Mancini’s famous Pink Panther theme and the second Contrapunctus of The Art of Fugue by Johan-Sebastian Bach, who had been born exactly three hundred years before. The Bach Panther ends with the superposition of these two themes, allowing of course that of Bach to conclude in the three final measures. An opportunity arose to treat the end of Mancini’s theme with Art-of-the-Fugue-esque harmony, which allowed for the harmonic seams to disappear. The other reason for this composition was to « classicalize » the present, in opposition to the more common procedure of « jazzifying » the past.
