Two women journalists associated with 4PM news outlet have alleged that they were detained and assaulted by Delhi Police personnel after attempting to question Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at an event in south Delhi. The journalists claimed they were taken to a room and assaulted, alleging they were questioned about their community and beaten again after identifying themselves as Muslims.
Delhi Police has denied the allegations, calling them “factually incorrect” and “misleading.” Police claimed the journalists had obstructed a designated VVIP security route by parking their scooter near the venue and had allegedly created a disturbance and manhandled a pregnant police officer. According to police, the women were allowed to leave within five to 10 minutes of reaching the station.
The allegations have drawn condemnation from several journalists’ organisations, which have called for an impartial investigation into the incident.
