Doing this mission on Steel Path grants more materials. 7 instead of 5 at every 50 crystals collected, and 15 instead of 10 at every successful wave defense set. Also Steel Essence drops from Acolytes.
Killing enemies will spawn more crystals to collect, so using abilities to stall the enemies is fine, but ultimately a good team that kills + collects will earn more materials.
