When I was young, defeating Axle Gear was a challenge. Even on the easiest difficulty setting. He packs quite a punch, and it was a hellish experience when I tried on harder difficulties. Yet, I never quite tried to develop a strategy back then.
This is a simple strategy to win against him. I suppose it's not hard to come up with, but maybe it'll be of help.
Basically, just get close to him. When he swings his arm, go back, and when he misses, get close to him again and attack. The ending lag of his missed attack should give you enough time to punch him.

Some notes about the audio commentary: This commentary contains a modest amount of screaming, light Portuguese accents, and the occasional swear. If you dont approve of that, feel free to mute the video, as most clips work just fine without the audio.
I recommend ONLY using the closed captions IF you have a really hard time understanding what we say at one point; or if you dont want to hear us but still want to know what we said. The fact is that a lot goes on in the video, and the closed captions only get in the way, if you dont need them.
Notes:
-1:08 Koopa Shells being shot at tremendous speeds after hitting a Deku Nut is normal, but its just so surprising that I included it nonetheless.
-1:47 I kept laughing for a minute and 47 seconds! That seriously caught me off guard, and I just lost it completely. You just couldnt hear much of it because I was trying my best not to wake everybody up.
-5:01 Its a bit blurry, but Sonic really is stuck on his animation. Deku couldnt move whatsoever!
-Youll notice that some moments (bar 4:17) dont have audio commentary. Namely, 5:01, 6:05, 6:42, 8:53, 9:48 and 10:15. This is because at the time, MP3SkypeRecorder had updated, but the update had a glitch where it only kept the first 3 minutes of recording...
