When we become a Christian, a massive transformation takes place. Our darkness is turned to light. Sorrows that once burdened us are lifted and we experience the inexplicable joy of knowing we're forgiven and part adopted into God's family. But we don't have to read our Bibles very long to see God never said difficulties, pain, and suffering would disappear when we're converted. Judging from our experience, they often increase. That's because while God has given us the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of our heavenly inheritance, we're not there yet (2 Corinthians 5:4-5).
In the meantime, God uses the trials we face to test our faith and to make us more like Christ (1 Peter 1:6-7; Romans 5:3-5). In our waiting, we learn patience. In our pain, we learn trust. And in our loss, we come to see that knowing Christ far surpasses anything this world can offer (Philippians 1:19-20; 3:8-10). "Deepest Valley" gives us words to lament the valleys we walk through while at the same time rooting us in unchanging truth. Christ our Shepherd is always with us (John 10:11, Matthew 28:20). Jesus, our faithful high priest, fully knows our sorrows (Hebrews 4:15). And God is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, which will make these present trials seem light and momentary (2 Corinthians 4:16718).
So whatever our circumstances, we can take heart. One day sin and sorrow will be forgotten, and we will feast forever at the marriage supper of the Lamb. And the only valleys we'll walk through will be those that overflow with the mercy and grace of Christ.
