I fed MuseNet's deep learning A.I the first few passages of Chopin's Nocturne no. 2 in Eb. I told it to try to play in the style of Chopin and also played around with the passages it wrote to try and steer it into something that could potentially pass as some legitimate development.
The AI is fantastic at developing phrases based on parts of pieces you feed it, but it has a hard time at recalling certain motifs and/or doesn't want intense development sections. Since the AI has this restraint, I re-arranged the themes that it developed for me into something that can resemble a finished piece of musical thought instead of the "impromptu" continuation that it is programed to do. I also changed the tempo automation for what would seem natural. The only thing I don't touch of the midi is the velocity and notes (for the most part). I typically have to create a resolution at some point since the bot likes to carry passages forever.
After all of this, I then put the finished midi into a DAW to play a modeled Pleyel piano (1835), which is what Chopin likely would have played.. I also tuned the piano to A=432, which is similar to the tuning Chopin would have used. There isn't much documentation on Chopin's tuning, but this was the popular tuning in Europe around his time.
The animated GIFs in the video are also of AI generation. I told an AI, The Big Sleep, to generate images based on the key terms "Mozart Robot." I then downloaded a few sequence of images and then animated them in a GIF program.
The animated video is created using Stephen Malinowski's Music Animation Machine. It allows you to import a midi file which the program then creates a choice of animations. The particular one here is a lattice that denotes the intervals between notes.
