The Word On The Street’s December Book Talk features Kai Cheng Thom on her new book for young readers For Laika: The Dog Who Learned The Name of the Stars. Kai Cheng Thom is a writer, performance artist, and community healer in Toronto. She is an author whose oeuvre includes a novel, a collection of poetry, a memoir, and collected essays. Kai Cheng won the Writers' Trust of Canada's Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ Emerging Writers in 2017.

Kai Yun Ching is a community-based consultant, educator, and illustrator. They edited and published Children's Stories, a collection of tales written by children, with the publishing collective Quilted Creatures in 2016.

For Laika: The Dog Who Learned the Names of the Stars was released in November 2021 with Arsenal Pulp Press.
