Composed by Debussy for Clarinet and Piano in 1910 and transcribed a year later for Orchestra by Debusssy, this piece has mainly been performed as the latter in the form of a short Clarinet Concerto, rarely heard in the form of the smaller, chamber piece setting heard here for Clarinet and Piano.
Each piece has beautiful reasons to be heard, but I find this, the toned down original version, to be much more satisfying.
The reason the piece is titled Premiere is that Debussy intended to compose several "Rhapsodies" for chamber; his untimely death in 1918 left this goal, sadly, not to be completed.
Performing are members of the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society.
