Unique items are one of the most commonly asked for rebalances in D2R. This seems like an insurmountable task for a developer who is running the game in maintenance mode. However, I believe it wouldn't take much to bring plenty of unique items back into the landscape of usable gear if we can show exactly how to do it.

here are 4 melee builds i made that all have no crazy jewels and do not require thousands of divines to play. they are all pretty tanky and can dish out good damage with smart combos and passive weapon swap choices. all can be built in the upcoming 0.5.5 league since there will be no balance changes until 1.0 launch. hopefully these inspire you to create really cool builds yourself.
