A deadly round of flash flooding left behind damage across eastern Kanawha and Fayette counties.
In the upper Kanawha Valley, Paint Creek and Cabin Creek both spilled out of their banks, covering roads, threatening homes and stranding some residents.
In Fayette County a woman died after the vehicle she was in was swept away by fast-moving floodwater near Pax. Searchers found her vehicle, then her body.
The road-destroying force of the weather left some people cut off from their own damaged property.
Among the places that got blocked off by the flooding is the Fayette County Animal Shelter. The bridge is safe to walk on now, but not suitable for vehicles.
Before some plates were dropped to replace the missing deck, it was a tightrope walk for shelter officials to feed and check on the animals.
While August has brought considerable rain to the area, Sunday’s storms packed a punch and left scars for area residents.
