In 2014, Microsoft Founder Bill Gates described the mosquito as the “deadliest animal in the world.” It is estimated by the World Health Organisation that they kill roughly 750,000 people per year.

In this episode, we’ll focus on two deadly disease events caused by mosquitoes: The 2015-2016 Zika Virus outbreak, which began in Brazil and spread to parts of North and South America, and a 2018 outbreak of malaria throughout parts of Thailand and Myanmar which has become especially difficult to treat, as the virus becomes resistant to the drugs used to treat it. By the conclusion of this episode, you’ll understand why it isn’t sharks or snakes that we should be worried about. It’s MOSQUITOES.
