Captain Marvel a.k.a. Shazam a.k.a. Billy Batson, is one of the oldest, most notable, underappreciated characters from the DC Comics catalog. Ever since being fully bought by DC from Fawcett Comics, Shazam has been an influence in the wider DC continuity, teaming up with heroes like Superman and the rest of the Justice League, like Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, etc. He's also been a part of the Justice Society of America. Shazam's most prolific adaptation is the DCEU movies starring Zachary Levi. Unfortunately, there was a missed opportunity in not having the character face Black Adam, played by Dwayne Johnson. Many animated projects, such as Young Justice, the DCAMU, and Justice League Unlimited, have featured Shazam in various roles. There remains hope that the DCU under James Gunn can revitalize the character in a different format, free from studio interference and incoherent planning.
