Didn't realise these non-Freaker wolves would chase me this far, I hadn't realised I'd used up so much of my pistol ammo during a chase and I also hadn't twigged the skill I'd unlocked to insta-kill small attackers when escaping a grapple had a time window to execute it. So all in all, complete incompetence on my part.
