Rescuers continue searching for one missing hiker following Saturday's deadly flash floods, bringing to light a major tracking challenge for park officials. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, officials utilized the park's internal permitting system to account for everyone on the trails. Elizabeth Peace, associate deputy director of communications for the U.S. Department of the Interior, confirmed that all but one person were accounted for based on permitting records.
However, officials faced an immediate obstacle because the park does not require permits for day hikers. Brian Speciale, host of "The Grand Canyon Hiker Dude Show" podcast, explained that permits have historically only been required for overnight stays below the rim. David Black, incident commander with the National Park Service, acknowledged that numerous day hikers enter the canyon without official record.
The tracking gap has prompted discussions within the hiking community regarding whether the park should mandate day-hiking permits. Speciale noted that while knowing hiker locations would aid rescue operations, implementing and controlling such a system across a vast geographic area presents significant logistical hurdles.
