The disciples are hungry. They pick a little grain. And immediately someone asks whether they have broken the rules.

In Luke 6:1–6, Jesus does something more interesting than simply dismissing the rule: He reminds His listeners what it was for.

On this Saturday morning, Adrian and Clara begin in a first-century grain field and find themselves surprisingly close to modern life—where algorithms measure, sort, recommend and optimize more of our world every day. With Benedictine College concluding its “Church in an Algorithmic Age” symposium in Atchison, they consider an increasingly important question: What happens when the system becomes more important than the person it was created to serve?

Along the way: the strange wisdom of the Sabbath, why not everything valuable can be measured, a little news from around Atchison, coffee, Saturday mornings—and the possibility that sometimes the most human thing we can do is something wonderfully unproductive.
