Good morning from the little station on Commercial Street in Atchison, Kansas.
What is worth holding onto?
That’s the question running quietly through this Friday edition of Daybreak.
Today’s Gospel, Matthew 19:3–12 from the Douay-Rheims Bible, begins with a question about divorce. But Christ takes the conversation somewhere deeper—to marriage, fidelity, and the meaning of a promise intended to endure.
Then we meet St. Maximilian Kolbe.
Most of us know the extraordinary end of his story: the Franciscan priest who offered his own life at Auschwitz in place of another prisoner.
But there’s another side of Kolbe that seems especially appropriate for a broadcast from our little station. He was fascinated by the possibilities of modern communications. He built a remarkable publishing apostolate and embraced radio as a means of carrying faith and ideas beyond the walls of a monastery.
A saint who understood the possibilities of radio? Naturally, we had to talk about him.
Closer to home, today is All Aboard Atchison Match Day. More than 60 local organizations are participating, with $150,000 in matching funds available—a day when individual acts of generosity become something much larger because a community chooses to act together.
And up the hill at Benedictine College, summer quiet is giving way to move-in season. Cars, boxes, parents and students are returning, and another school year is beginning.
Perhaps all of these stories ask a version of the same question:
What do we value enough to remain faithful to?
A marriage. A promise. A faith. A school. A community. A neighbor.
And maybe even an old radio play somebody thought was worth saving.
