If DaVinci Resolve is choking on your mid-range laptop, these two settings will change everything. Timeline Playback Resolution and Smart Render Cache can take a struggling machine and make it feel twice as fast. This is the setup I use when I'm editing on the go, and it makes a massive difference in playback and timeline responsiveness.
DaVinci Resolve doesn't need a high-end GPU to feel smooth, you just need to configure it properly. Try these settings and watch your timeline finally keep up. You can increase your Davinci speed, especially the timeline speed, and the fact you are using a low to mid range laptop for video editing won't be so much of an issue. That being said, a dedicated GPU and at least 32 gigs of RAM are highly recommended!
