The crew chief of the #87 NEMCO Motorsports Chevy Brian Pattie gave an opportunity to a family that raised him in the motorsports business. As told in Matt Yocum's report, Brian had his racing upbringing with Buzzie Reutimann, the legendary dirt modified racer from Zephyrhills, Florida. As a pay back to the Reutimann family, Brian was able to arrange Buzzie's son David Reutimann a start in the #87 car owned by Joe Nemechek.
With sponsorship from GEICO Direct, David started 34th in the 2002 Hardee's 250 at Richmond International Raceway. Even with the crazy race with 11 caution flags and almost half the field wiped out, Reutimann kept his nose clean. He finished a very respectable 16th.
This led to other opportunities to drive the #87 car later in 2002. He would later go on to have a very successful NASCAR career in both the Busch Series and NASCAR Cup Series.
