Written for Lauren Scott as part of Psappha’s Composing For… scheme, retina aims to evoke imagery of light reflecting off surfaces. Musically, this comes across as isolated fragments and patterns of bright, resonant sounds which rotate in irregular patterns. I also wanted to get the most out of the way the harp resonates: four of the strings are detuned and then used in patterns which relate to the natural harmonic series. I chose the title retina after finishing the whole piece. It seemed like an apt metaphor for the harp itself, being something that translates detailed technical information into vivid imagery.
