David Lee Roth made that remark during his appearances on The Joe Rogan Experience.

On the 2021 episode, Roth explained his songwriting philosophy:

"Every Van Halen song has a Motown chorus. I saw to it, conscious."

Roth's point was that Van Halen's heavy guitar riffs were paired with choruses that almost anyone could sing. He believed that combination gave the band unusually broad appeal across rock, pop, and mainstream audiences.
