Well I swore I would never compete again. The disappointment of not winning, it can be crushing when your motivations are not pure. I realize now, my heart was not in the right place. Not just with whistling--but with everything. It's very easy to mindlessly go through life thinking everything is a competition. We compare ourselves to others. And we make ourselves miserable in the process. But that's not what life is really supposed to be about! Life should be a cooperation; not a competition.
I'm grateful to the founding members of the International Whistlers Guild for creating the Guild, and this contest. Thank you, all of you, and thanks to all who have entered. Winning would be nice, but it's not my goal or my motivation this time. I don't care if I win or not; I'm just glad to have a good reason to put together some whistling again and share it. I hope it brightens someone's day. I hope that someone is you!
I whistle for the enjoyment of others, but most of all, I whistle for my own enjoyment. If I ever lose focus again on what this art form is about--the sheer joy of making music from my heart, and expressing it for whoever else wants to hear it!--well please, someone, smack me upside the head and remind me to quit putting so much dang importance on something that is supposed to be fun. Because at the end of the day, win or lose, if you're not having fun, then you're not doing it right. That goes for everything in life, not just whistling.
And so I hope you enjoy my entry. The kind of whistling I enjoy most is just whistling whatever comes to mind. And so, that's what I'm doing here. This is a spontaneous jazz improv set to a Jamey Aeboersold practice track, a Blues in B Flat. I highly recommend practicing to these, or any other music you love. It's a great way to train your ear and develop your creativity.
Thank you again, International Whistlers Guild. I am at your service. Long Live The Guild!!! Long Live Whistling!!! May it unite every ear and conquer every last heart with any inkling of wickedness left--even my own--until all the darkness is gone and there is nothing left but peace and harmony.
