Rising Tides: Geopolitics and Geoeconomics in a Global Context
Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) is delighted to have co-hosted ‘Rising Tides: Geopolitics and Geoeconomics in a Global Context’ with the Jeffrey Cheah Institute on Southeast Asia, Sunway University, supported by the University of Oxford to discuss the global outlook of geopolitics and geoeconomics.
The panel covered a wide range of analysis including the political and economical landscape of Brazil, the United States, the Middle East, Europe, Russia-Ukraine, Malaysia and ASEAN. The session showcased the importance of understanding diverse geopolitical and economic contexts to navigate the complexities of our increasingly interconnected world.
Our heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed panellists, Professor Timothy Power, Head of Social Sciences Division, University of Oxford; Dato’ Dr. Afifi al-Akiti, Kuwait Fellow in Islamic Studies, Faculty of Theology and Religion, University of Oxford; Professor Paul Chaisty, Head of Oxford School of Global and Area Studies, University of Oxford and Professor Evelyn Devadason, Professor at the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Malaya for their invaluable contributions to the session. About Dato' Dr Afifi al-Akiti
Dato' Dr Afifi al-Akiti is the Kuwait Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies and lectures at the Faculty of Theology - Oxford University’s oldest faculty. He is the first ever Malaysian to be appointed to such a position in this world-famous university. He is also a Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford, where he is an expert of both Islam and Christianity.
From 2018 to 2020 Dato' Afifi was appointed by the Conference of Rulers in Malaysia as Deputy Chairman to the High-Level Panel on the Federal Administration of Islam, a Royal Commission looking into institutional reforms of the Islamic religious establishment at the federal level in that country.
Since 2010, Dato' Dr Afifi has been listed in The Muslim 500: The World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims.
