Her first outing with Shido offered her a glimpse into human society, leading her to appreciate the world and even develop empathy for the AST's desire to eliminate her due to the unintended havoc caused by Spacequakes. After her sealing, she was able to experience and convey emotions through living on Earth. Since everything was novel to Tohka, including her own feelings, she displayed a bubbly and innocent demeanor that could occasionally come across as naïve, emotional, enthusiastic, and easily deceived. She was thrilled by the new sights on Earth, which she had never encountered before. Origami exploited her gullibility on several occasions, often requiring one of her friends, typically Shido, to point out when she was being misled. To seal a Spirit's powers, Shido must date her and win her heart!
Yamai was once a single Spirit, but something—perhaps related to her ability to teleport between dimensions—caused her to split into two separate beings, each with its own body and mind. The original Yamai's personality and character traits are now lost, and neither of the split Yamais knows what she was like. The Yamai Sisters have become infamous among those familiar with Spirits due to the massive storms they create whenever they come to Earth.
Although it’s unclear when their conflict began, the Yamai Sisters have been locked in a prolonged battle to determine who is the true Yamai. Their contests, which have ranged from non-violent to highly intense, number nearly 100. They each have 25 wins and 49 draws. They agreed that their 100th battle would be the ultimate decider. By coincidence, during a field trip to a southern island with Shido and his classmates, the sisters decided that their final match would be to see who could seduce Shido first to claim the title of the real Yamai. Reine's intervention led the Yamai Sisters to transfer into Shido’s high school just in time to start their new battle.
