Hey it’s me, Darwin! Wanna see something cool? This is a 3D photomosaic model of an actual coral reef called Cheeca Rocks! By diving over a reef in a lawn mower pattern with a camera that takes hundreds of photos every second, scientists in AOML’s Coral Program create a 3 dimensional model known as a photomosaic. They help scientists to examine, quantify and determine how coral reefs change overtime - the process of creating photomosaics is called “Photogrammetry!”. Through revisiting key monitoring sites, scientists can monitor how events like coral bleaching and natural erosion impact large tracts of reef throughout time!
