When the Taliban took power in August 2021, they closed off access to formal education for girls aged 11 and over. According to UNESCO, 80% of school-aged Afghan girls and young women, 2.5 million people, are now out of school.

In response, the BBC World Service created “Dars” or “Lesson”, a TV and radio series in Pashto and Dari. Now, despite the challenges, four female BBC presenters who fled the country following the Taliban takeover are helping to bring education back to Afghan children.
