Welcome to the 8th Dark Sun Player knowledge video. This new series is intended to give the players in a Dark Sun campaign the knowledge their characters would most likely have about the world of Athas having lived there all their lives. There will be no DM secret lore here, so you don’t have to worry about this video spoiling your fun discovering hidden arcana through adventure. Today’s video is about Athasian Aarakocras.
The Aarakocra of the Dark Sun setting can be divided into two varieties. Both are tall lean birdmen that resemble humanoid vultures. The first type lives in the deep desert on rocky outcroppings. They survive by scavenging or raiding those they deem weaker than themselves. They rarely interact with the other peoples of Athas outside of combat, they do not trade or live with non-Aarakocra. These Aarakocra range in color from black to dark gray and dark brown. The second type are also rarely seen, because it is said they all come from a mountain village far to the north of the tablelands. They differ from their southern cousins, in several ways not the least of which is their civilized nature. Their color also set them apart from their more savage kin. Their plumes come in shades of light blue, silver and even white.
Being creatures of the open sky Aarakocra find entering the confines of a building or cave most unpleasant and will avoid doing so unless it is absolutely necessary.
As adventures the northern birdmen can fill many roles in a party, although their light brittle bones, reverence for nature, and poor singing voices preclude them from being Gladiators, Defilers, and Bards. Aarakocra make good party scouts and lookouts. Their swaying gate does not lend itself to long overland walks, so they prefer to fly, giving them a superior view of the surroundings.
In combat Aarakocra have some advantages, such as their flight, and the fact that their feathers act as rudimentary armor, and they have some disadvantages as well. Clubs maces and the like can crush their light weight frames much more easily than they could a human. They also need more room to fight. Aarakocra find it hard to fight unless they have the room to stretch their wings out.
