Welcome to the 5th Dark Sun Player knowledge video. This series is intended to give the players in a Dark Sun campaign the knowledge their characters would most likely have about the world of Athas having lived there all their lives. There will be no DM secret lore here, so you don’t have to worry about this video spoiling your fun discovering hidden arcana through adventure. Today’s video is about the City-State of Raam.
The City-State of Raam is located in the north-central part of the Tablelands; between Urik and Draj on the caravan road. Its culture and architecture are loosely pre-Islamic Indian mixed with a large helping of fantasy.
Raam is ruled by the Sorcerer Queen Abalach-Re. She has adopted the title the Great Vizier, claiming she was installed as such by a mysterious god like power, to be the ruler and guardian of the city. Her misdirection is resented by her people, inspiring rebellion in their hearts.
Abalach-Re’s palace is a grand structure of domed towers with ivory walls and alabaster roofs, sitting above the rest of the city on a grassy knoll. Surrounding her palace are layers of defensive walls and ditches, to keep out the chaos and squalor that are so pervasive throughout the rest of the city. Depending on where in the Dark Sun timeline your game takes place, and how closely your DM follows its metaplot, Abalach-Re may not reign over Raam.
Because of the rampant unrest in Raam the Great Vizier’s Templars never go out alone; to do so is to invite assassination. Unlike in most city-states of the Tyr region, the templars of Raam seldom deal with the city’s administration and law enforcement. Only the most egregious threats to the city’s stability are worth the risk incurred by addressing them.
The nobility of Raam are bitter about Abalach-Re’s rule. They see her weak governance as hurting their ability to increase their wealth. The estates of the nobles line the caravan road for miles near the city. Most of them produce goods to be sold in foreign markets, like silk, cloth, and one noble family owns a silver mine. Very few of the nobles grow food crops, because of this the city’s food supply is largely imported. This makes food so expensive the poor, free and enslaved alike are always starving. This is one of the major causes of the unrest in Raam.
Several of the major trading houses have small well defended offices that they do business out of, while House M’Ke is headquartered in Raam. They have a well-guarded trade emporium; the city’s largest by far.
