The run TO this boss was far harder than the boss itself, and it's one of the glaring deficiencies of Dark Souls 2 compared to its compadres. For the most part, running past enemies that aren't worth fighting is a pretty standard part of the SL1 experience but the mob mentality of DS2 combined with the fact that you don't get i-frames immediately upon reaching the fog gate means that you often have to clear some space around the fog gate (or clear the entire area) before fighting a boss. And the Iron Keep is not very friendly to SL1 players...
