Capitanes Juan and Aida Flores of San Diego, California lead Danza Azteca Calpulli Mexihca in a recent Day of the Dead performance at the Sherman Heights Community Center. Danza Azteca Calpulli Mexihca seeks to revive and preserve the ancient dances of the Aztec civilization of Mexico and Central America.
The dance group includes members of all ages. It stresses dancing as a wholesome family activity, safe for children as well as adults. Discipline of its members is strictly enforced while providing entertainment to its members and to the public.
Requiring physical agility as well as stamina, Danza Azteca performances can go on for hours. This performance, on November 1, 2010, preceded a community walk, and a Day of the Dead gathering at world famous Chicano Park in Barrio Logan of San Diego.
Dance costumes are from simple to elaborate. Pheasant feathers as long as 3 feet adorn the head dresses of many dancers. Feathers of other birds provide color and variety.
