In 1949, Mao came to power through the Communist revolution in China. In 1950 China occupied Tibet and Dalai Lama, who was ruling Tibet, came under the control of the Communist Party. The communist party was anti-religion and abolished Tibetan cultural practices, which lead to severe conflict. In 1959 there was a massive uprising in Tibet which forced the Chinese Communist Party to impose even harsher rule on the mountainous region. Close to 100,000 people lost their lives in the rebellion. In 1959, Dalai Lama escaped to India.
