This is The Virgin of the Rocks by Leonardo da Vinci. Not Virgin ON the Rocks. Although, Leonardo probably could've used one of those after what he went through with this piece. Perhaps no other painting gave him as much trouble as this one. Or maybe I should say pieces. There are actually two versions of them. But why did Leonardo, who so rarely finished any of his paintings, create two versions of the same piece?
The story begins when Leonardo signs a contract to finish this painting in seven months. Instead, he held his own masterpiece hostage, battled his patrons in court, and delivered the painting twenty-five years late.
The Virgin of the Rocks was commissioned in 1483 by the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception as the centerpiece of a large altarpiece for their church. The church of San Francesco Grande in Milan. And Leonardo was hired alongside the de Predis brothers to paint it.
We don't know exactly what went wrong with the commission. But we know that the first version of the painting never made it to the chapel. It took 25 years from when the painting was commissioned until Leonardo finally delivered the Confraternity their painting and in the meantime, he lived basically 9 different lives.
The painting features Mary, Jesus, John the Baptist and an angel in a rocky grotto with an ethereal bluish-green landscape in the background. We can see techniques Leonardo was famous for such as sfumato and chiaroscuro on full display. Since the Immaculate conception was a relatively new idea at the time, there weren't any paintings for Leonardo to base his work on and so he was very creative with the subject matter.
