In this episode of Wisdom Dharma Chats, host Daniel Aitken welcomes Lama Alan Wallace to discuss his new volume, Śamatha and Vipaśyanā, and to reflect on his formative years studying and practicing in India. Lama Alan shares stories from his rigorous training under eminent Tibetan masters, highlighting how these experiences shaped his understanding of the Mahāyāna path and the union of wisdom and skillful means. The conversation delves into the essential role of śamatha and vipaśyanā in overcoming the five obscurations, cultivating irreversible bodhicitta, and progressing toward full enlightenment. Lama Alan explains how these practices—rooted in centuries-old instructions—are equally relevant today, offering a powerful antidote to modern-day distractions and a path toward both spiritual awakening and psychological healing.
Daniel and Lama Alan also explore the intersection of contemplative traditions with science and mental healthcare, noting the limitations of modern education and research funding in addressing the mind’s deeper needs. They envision a renaissance in contemplative practice that integrates precise, empirical methods for investigating consciousness with the transformative compassion at the heart of the Dharma. Rich with insight, history, and practical guidance, this conversation invites practitioners to bring these timeless meditations fully into the context of contemporary life.

Join host Daniel Aitken to continue the conversation started in Part 1 of this mini series with Lama Alan Wallace. Eva begins with the story of how she first became a student of Lama Alan, before providing a brief overview of the context in which the idea for their new volume, Śamatha and Vipaśanā, came into fruition. She then shares her role in the creation of the book, placing great emphasis on the importance of clarity in translation. She goes on to describe the process of translation as a form of “guru yoga” for her, a devotional practice that provided a continuous source of inspiration. She and Daniel continue to discuss the texts included within the volume, noting similarities between traditions and even the connections between Buddhism and Christianity. Eva also offered insight into what a long-term solitary retreat can offer individuals, along with advice on applying to retreats at the Center for Contemplative Research, where she is a co-founder.
Eva Natanya is a scholar of Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, Christian theology, and comparative religion, and has served in many capacities as a spiritual teacher, translator of Tibetan texts, author, and retreat leader. Following a nine-year career as a professional ballet dancer with both the New York City Ballet and the Royal Ballet of England, she earned an MA in Christian Systematic Theology at the Graduate Theological Union, and a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia. Her dissertation examined the complex interactions of Madhyamaka, Yogacara, and Abhidharma teachings as they underlie the Vajrayana philosophy of Je Tsongkhapa. She has spent more than four years in solitary meditation retreat, is the co-founder of the Center for Contemplative Research, and currently serves as resident teacher at the CCR’s Miyo Samten Ling Hermitage in Crestone, Colorado, while continuing her solitary retreat practice.Serkong Rinpoche | Dharma Chats with Daniel AitkenDaniel Aitken2025-10-04 | For more Dharma Chats, visit: dharmachats.com

With clarity and humor, Khandro Rinpoche reflects on how all experiences—joyful and painful alike—arise through the web of dependent origination. She offers a compelling vision of compassion grounded in reality, where happiness is seen as a shared aspiration and suffering as a condition we can transform through wisdom. The conversation weaves together timeless Buddhist teachings with contemporary challenges, touching on themes such as identity and the innate potential for awakening in ourselves and others.
As the conversation deepens, Khandro Rinpoche offers profound reflections on key elements of the bodhisattva path: wisdom and compassion. She shares how these two realizations support each other in practice and are indispensable for anyone seeking to move beyond conceptual understanding and toward genuine inner transformation. Her insights illuminate how the cultivation of great compassion must be inseparable from the direct understanding of emptiness, if we are to bring lasting benefit to ourselves and others.
Khandro Rinpoche also speaks to the subtle yet potent power of presence—what it means to truly be in the company of a lama and how spiritual transmission depends not just on teachings but on direct connection. She reminds us that while knowledge may be increasingly accessible online, the cultivation of inner transformation still calls for guidance, humility, and devotion. The Body as a Hermitage, The Mind as the Hermit: A Dharmachat on Inner TransformationDaniel Aitken2025-07-01 | Watch the full interview at dharmachats.com

Sharing Wisdom Across Traditions with Ven. Thbten Chodron Summary 📚 Learning Beyond One’s Own Tradition – Studying a tradition through its own texts rather than interpreting it through another tradition provides deeper insight. 🔄 Mutual Learning – Understanding another tradition can enhance one’s grasp of their own beliefs. 📖 The Power of Pali Scriptures – The Buddha’s descriptions of samsara’s disadvantages and selflessness offer profound meditation insights. 🤔 Shared Philosophical Rebuttals – Arguments against the self in Pali scriptures align closely with Tibetan sources like Nagarjuna and Chandrakirti. 🌍 Unity in Teachings – Seeing familiar teachings from different Buddhist traditions in the Buddha’s words can be a beautiful realization. 📜 "One Teacher, Many Traditions" – Various Buddhist traditions stem from the same source, despite differing perspectives. 🚫 Misconceptions Among Traditions – Theravadins may doubt Mahayana’s authenticity, Tibetans may misunderstand Theravadins, and Chinese Buddhists may perceive Tibetans as mystical. 🎲 Cultural Stereotypes – Some view Tibetan Buddhism as magical, even expecting fortune-telling abilities! 🕊️ The Buddha’s Vision – Seeing different Buddhist traditions come together in harmony would likely bring great joy to the Buddha. 🏯 A Living Example – When His Holiness teaches, diverse monks and nuns unite, reciting texts like the Heart Sutra, demonstrating inter-traditional respect.Hidden Yogis and the Life Source of the Buddhas Teachings with Chokyi Nyima RinpocheDaniel Aitken2025-02-21 | Blazing Splendor the book: wisdomexperience.org/product/blazing-splendor
On the Hidden Yogi 🧘♂️ His father was called a "hidden yogi" because he avoided titles and remained humble. He claimed not to be a big Lama, philosopher, or even a good practitioner. Despite this, he spent most of his life in retreat—completing five three-year retreats. Practiced extensively in India and Sikkim.
Encounters with Great Masters 🙏 Had close relationships with revered Lamas, including the 16th Karmapa. Witnessed high-ranking teachers interacting with his father. Met numerous great masters, including in Tibet and other regions. Received teachings from influential teachers, which broadened his understanding.
Embracing Religious Pluralism 🌍 His teachings encouraged respect for all traditions, including Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. Met inspiring practitioners from various religions, including deeply kind and wise Christians in England. A Christian teacher gave a thoughtful response on the concept of "Everlasting Hell." Observed dedicated monks in Thailand who truly embodied Buddhist principles.
Core Buddhist Teachings 🏯 Emphasized following "Tipa" (Shila, Samadhi, Prajna)—ethical conduct, meditation, and wisdom. Stressed the importance of respecting Buddha as the source of Buddhist teachings. Built a temple and installed thousands of Buddha statues to preserve Buddhist teachings. The 16th Karmapa advised making Buddha statues to ensure Buddhism remains on the planet.
A Message to Practitioners 📖 Encouraged not to overcomplicate practice but to remain grounded in core Buddhist principles. Warned against neglecting Buddha while engaging in excessive ritual activities. Advocated for sincerity and honesty in spiritual practice rather than mere formalities.Complete interview with Bhikkhu Bodhi | Dharma ChatsDaniel Aitken2025-02-17 | see more at dharmachat.com
The Structure of Buddhist Texts 🏗️🔍 Middle-Length Discourses: Organized by text length, not topic. Connected Discourses: Thematically arranged (e.g., Four Noble Truths, Dependent Origination). Long Discourses: Often intended for non-Buddhist audiences to introduce teachings.
How This Anthology is Organized 🛤️🧘 Based on the Four Noble Truths as a framework. Chapters follow a logical sequence, covering: Suffering (Dukkha) – Five Aggregates, Sense Bases. Cause of Suffering – Craving & Dependent Origination. Cessation of Suffering – Path to Nirvana.
The Way – Noble Eightfold Path, Mindfulness, Enlightenment Factors.
What is Nirvana? 🔥🌊 Not mere non-existence—but the cessation of suffering. Described as the deathless element (amata dhātu). Realized through insight into impermanence, suffering, and non-self. Nirvana is unconditioned, beyond conceptual thought. Relation Between Consciousness & Enlightenment 🧠💡 Consciousness is part of the Five Aggregates, which cease in Nirvana. Enlightenment (Bodhi) is the direct realization of Nirvana. At the moment of Nirvana, consciousness does not continue—it transforms.
Is Nirvana a Blissful State? 😌🌿 Nirvana is described as "supreme bliss" but is not a conditioned experience. It is beyond conventional pleasure and pain. Dependent Origination & Nirvana 🔄⚖️ Dependent Origination explains how suffering arises. Nirvana is reached when ignorance & craving cease. Nirvana is not dependent on causes—it is unconditioned.
Advice for Practitioners 🧘📖 For beginners: Start with In the Buddha’s Words (broad teachings). For deeper study: Move to Noble Truths, Noble Paths. For serious engagement: Read the Middle-Length Discourses. Social Engagement & Buddhism 🌍❤️ Bhikkhu Bodhi founded Buddhist Global Relief, addressing hunger & poverty. Advocates for environmental responsibility based on Buddhist ethics. Final Words 🙏🌟 Encourages deep study & practice of the Dharma. Reflecting on death & impermanence can inspire renunciation. Nirvana is always present, but must be realized individually. Let me know if you’d like any refinements! 😊Meditation on Space: A Journey to Boundless Awareness with Mingyur Rinpoche & Ven.
