Cyprus Brandy Sour. The most famous cocktail in Cyprus.
My holiday in Cyprus was terrific, and I couldn't go home without showing you how to make the most famous cocktail in Cyprus. It is even better as I ask our amazing bartender Stelios to show us how to make it.
We stayed in the Mimosa Beach Hotel in Protaras. Beautiful family-run hotel with fantastic staff and atmosphere.
The Cyprus Brandy Sour dates back to the 1930s when King Farouk of Egypt spent much of his time in Cyprus's Troodos mountain area, staying at the Forest Park Hotel in the mountain resort of Platres.
Despite being a Muslim, the young king liked Western cocktails, so the hotel management devised the cocktail as a substitute for iced tea. Once the drink became known in other hotels in the resort, it quickly spread to other towns on the island. Today the Brandy Sour is internationally recognized as "the" Cyprus cocktail.

CYPRUS BRANDY SOUR - Mimosa Beach Hotel recipe
- 60ml / 2oz KEO or Anglias Brandy
- 25ml / .75oz Lemon Squash
- 45ml / 1.5oz Soda Water
- 5-6 dashes Angostura Bitters
CYPRUS BRANDY SOUR - an original recipe by Cyprus Bartender Association
- 50ml Cyprus Brandy (typically KEO VSOP or Haggipavlu Anglias Brandy)
- 25ml Cyprus Lemon Squash (or alternatively home-made lemon squash)
- 2-4 drops of Angostura Bitters
- Top up with Soda Water
