Why Doing Less Lets You Be More Creative
So many creatives have so many pursuits and projects and we can be so afraid of letting go of some of them because it’s like letting a part our identity or passion die. And honestly, the thought of that can be kinda depressing.
But instead of thinking about it in those terms, you can say to yourself, “No I’m *choosing* to do less, so with what remains, I can do *better*.”

What I shoot with: boomshiddang.com/gear2 Annoying Things You Need to Know About Fujifilm’s Camera Remote AppBoom Shiddang2020-08-15 | The Fujifilm Camera Remote App can be amazing, except when it comes to two things!
There are two settingss in particular that I find frustrating to not be able to control in the app. The first is the self-timer — which seems an obvious thing given that it’s a remote app and the other is the ND filter, which really only affects the X100 series of cameras.
Fortunately there is a simple workaround for this: setting an on-camera shortcut for both of these things so that you can turn them on/off BEFORE pairing your camera to your phone via wifi.
Remember that the key thing is to do it beforehand because you won’t be able to control either of these things once you’re paired up.
Later in the video, I show you how exactly to set shortcuts using the custom functions on your Fujifilm camera.
And then I demonstrate how these come into play in a practical photoshoot.

Subscribe if you’re interested: youtube.com/user/boomshiddang/?sub_confirmation=1_Why Fujifilm Stopped Me Shooting RAWBoom Shiddang2019-12-18 | I love Fujifilm cameras for the film simulations. They’re the killer feature for me that brought me into the Fuji system, and was one of the reasons why I eventually stopped shooting RAW.
Everyone raves about Fuji straight-out-of-camera JPGs — so I thought: what if I shot JPG only?
So, after years of shooting RAW and having the comfort of knowing that I have an incredible amount of data in a RAW file to work with, I asked myself: could I let it all go? Could I shoot in JPG only?
Benefit 1: Space Immediately after shooting JPG only, I noticed how much more room I had leftover for all my video b-roll. It takes a lot longer now for me to fill up an SD card.
The other thing is that SSDs and cloud storage are pretty much the norm these days and neither of these things are cheap. So shooting JPG only actually can save you money in the long term because you end up being able to fit more files onto an expensive SSD or a cloud storage plan.
Benefit 2: Speed Let’s face it: loading JPGs is simply faster than loading RAW — editing also goes faster! This is because JPG files are a lot smaller on average than RAW file. In the example I show in the video, a file I looked specifically came out to 14MB in the JPG and 50MB in the RAW. That basically means the JPG is 14% the size of the RAW file — incredible!
You save time in post by being able to download images to your computer a LOT faster. I haven’t tested any benchmarks but in my experience, we are talking seconds vs minutes. This can add up to a lot over the course of your photographic career!
I also use Lightroom CC and backup my data to the cloud using Backblaze. Because JPGs are smaller, they back up a LOT faster than RAW files.
Benefit 3: Presence This is the interesting thing the power of creative constraint: oftentimes we fight against constraints but it is sometimes in the moments when constraints are imposed that we find liberation.
Because I know that I have less flexibility to post-process a JPG, I’m essentially forced to get my exposure and color exactly the way I want it **in camera** vs having the luxury of tweaking things later in post.
In addition to the technical benefits, the most valuable thing that a JPG-only workflow has given me is just being more cognizant of the present moment. Before I even press the shutter release, I spend more time taking in my surroundings and focussing on composition and exposure because I want to get it as right as much as I can on the spot, in the camera vs. postponing those creative decisions to some future time in post-production.
Shooting RAW, I always thought, “I can fix it post.”
But shooting JPG-only — of all things — has become more than just a setting for me. It’s a creative constraint that has made me more conscious photographer. So if anything — if you're not already — I dare you to shoot JPG only. At least just try it for a day and see what that does for you. Will you be to risk letting go of something outside of yourself in order to gain something deeper within?
“The more you are focused on time—past and future—the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is.” —Eckhart Tolle

↓ Let’s Socialize ↓ Instagram » instagram.com/boomshiddangI tried street photography for the first time with my X100F in Belfast.Boom Shiddang2019-12-02 | Recently I travelled with my X100F to Belfast, Northern Ireland where I challenged my own assumptions about street photography needing to strictly document reality as it is. I explore the question: What’s the difference between street photography and photojournalism?
Belfast was ravaged by the Troubles, a conflict that split the city apart between Catholics who wanted a united Ireland and Protestants who wanted to be loyal to the United Kingdom.
As you can imagine, the Troubles were well documented through photojournalism from the 1970s to the 1990s, when it ended officially through the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
Now, 21 years later, in a very different Belfast, I take my trusty Fujifilm X100F and explore the modern — and peaceful — streets of Belfast, through a different kind of lens: street photography.
Unlike photojournalism, which is newsworthy, street photography can be executed for the pure joy of satisfying a creative curiosity.
It was through this lens that I ventured out into the streets of Belfast.
Great street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier, and Robert Doisneau, knew how to capture everyday reality in artful ways.
Though I am fully aware I am a beginner to street photography and my shots might be totally overdone clichés, this video nevertheless shows the creative process behind my first attempt at a simple but effective street photography technique that seemed to have worked well for me.
“The one thing you learn is when you can step out of your comfort zone and be uncomfortable, you see what you're made of and who you are.” —Sue Bird

I made the switch the the Fujifilm X100F a year ago. Here I give you a look into what my experience with this beautiful piece of kit has been like during that time.
I go how well the X100F covers: Travel, Portraits, and Video — three categories that I use it for mainly.
A great choice for minimalists or anyone looking to reduce the size and weight of their camera kit when traveling, or for an everyday camera that can produce pro-level results. In terms of video, while I do think its output is amazing, and I've been able to produce a good amount of video content with it exclusively, there are features that are lacking that prevent me from continuing to use it as my only video camera.
