The Central Weather Administration has issued a warning for Typhoon Dolphin, which is approaching Taiwan. Areas in the north coast could be swept by the storm circle, and the Matsu Islands could potentially see a land warning. The impact on Taiwan proper remains to be determined, but Northern and Central Taiwan are bracing for heavy showers over the weekend, which could be extremely heavy or even torrential in mountainous areas in the north. Let’s hear from a meteorologist.

Wu Wan-hua
Central Weather Administration
The storm circle is very close to Northern Taiwan. If the storm veers slightly south as it passes north of Taiwan, coastal areas could be impacted. The chances of a land warning are quite high in the Matsu Islands. We may issue it tomorrow evening or Sunday morning. We will continue monitoring the situation for the impact in the north coast. We’re expecting heavy rains and extremely heavy rains in Northern Taiwan and mountainous areas of Central Taiwan. In mountainous areas in Taichung and to the north of Taichung, they may even be torrential. On Father’s Day on Saturday, even the mountains in the East Coast may see heavy showers, and parts of the central plains could see localized heavy downpours on Sunday.

The typhoon will be closest to Taiwan proper over the weekend. Northern coastal areas could be swept by strong winds of up to 102km/h, while Northern and Central Taiwan are in for a weekend full of intense rainfall. The typhoon is expected to move away from Taiwan by Monday.
