John Kelly finished the Barkley Marathons, a race only twenty people have ever completed.

Then he went back.

He was leading after two loops. And he quit.

Not because his body broke.

Because his mind already knew what the next sixty hours would feel like.

He calls it being cursed with the knowledge.

The first time, the unknown pulled him forward.

The second time, there was nothing left to discover, and the suffering did not seem worth it.

It took him years to find a new reason:

Stop asking “Can I finish?” and start asking “How much can I learn about myself?

That shift brought him back. He finished two more times.

The goal that got you there the first time will not get you there again.
