Curry House Memorial

It was 2007 when I went to my first Anime Expo at the time in Long Beach before moving it to Los Angeles a year later. With friends, we carpooled to Little Tokyo to mark our end of AX with lunch at Curry House. Puzzled, I was wondering what’s the big deal in driving all the way from Long Beach to Los Angeles’s Little Tokyo district for Japanese curry that I can easily get from a packet in a near by store? Little did I know, I would be introduced to the otaku subculture in that plaza alone before branching out to other foods like ramen and taiyaki. But after 37 years of serving it’s style of Youshoku food to the public, the doors were finally closed on the evening of February 23, 2020 without warning in all locations.
While some say it’s just a curry restaurant, others will point out it was a popular otaku hangout spot for people in the early 2000’s that was dubbed as one of “The Golden Ages of Anime” in America (though still debatable on the exact year). This was true in the Little Tokyo location. A memorial gathering was set on that day by Kitty Kaboom to say their final good byes and to reminisce the good times we had. Many people showed from regular customers to actual past and recent employees from the different Curry House locations! We all felt that if they had announced a final day, all of us agreed that we would party to the very end.
Myself and later a few others took turns to watch over the memorial site so that plaza security doesn’t take down the shrine again the previous few days ago. I come back and forth the site a few hours at a time to document the memorial until 8pm.
