In the last episode, we talked about the pathology of the most common form of dementia: Alzheimer's. Here discuss current treatments for Alzheimer's disease and why it is so difficult to find a cure.
The usage of current treatments depends on the stage and the severity of Alzheimer's. Acetylcholine esterase inhibitors are used to increase the levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Other drugs are antagonists of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. However, these drugs only delay the progression of Alzheimer's and provide no final solution.
To find a cure for Alzheimer's, we could tackle PS1, PS2 or the immune system of the brain. However, none of these approaches seem to work. Nontheless we start to understand the underlying mechanisms of the disease and discover more and more biomarkers. New generations of researchers will eventually find a cure for one of the greatest challenges of our society.
