October 27, 2024 service for the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City, featuring sing-alongs with the Salt Lake Strummers, a homily by lay minister Darlene Thayne, and a sermon by the Reverend J Sylvan.

The Salt Lake Strummers, a local group of ukulele players, are the day's honored musical guests. Throughout the service, they join the congregation in singing / playing a nostalgic collection of exuberant 20th-century songs.

Lay minister Darlene Thayne shares her personal journey of shifting political affiliationsβ€”from being a Republican member of the LDS Church, to becoming a Democrat after leaving the church and campaigning for Barack Obama, and finally re-registering as a Republican to promote moderate voices and political pluralism within her community. She emphasizes the importance of engaging across political divides to foster a society where diverse opinions can coexist peacefully, urging others to work collaboratively with people of different perspectives to make government work for all.

Rev. J Sylvan's sermon recounts a personal experience of mysterious nightly banging in their home's plumbing, which was ultimately resolved by a plumber who approached the problem with curiosity and humilityβ€”calling attention to the effectiveness of these qualities in overcoming challenges. They urge the congregation to bring the same spirit of curiosity and humility to upcoming discussions about updating the church's mission and vision statements, reminding them that their strong community will support and carry everyone forward even in uncertain times.
