Mini review:
Neat little game where the main attack mechanic is taking a hit so you can trigger your own attack. You can only take up to 5 hits in a certain amount of time before your shield breaks and puts you in a fatal state, requiring time to recover.
I find this game to be great for beginners. Since your attack triggers when you take a hit, you'll naturally focus on dodging and only attack when you feel it is safe to do so. You have 30 individual stages you can play at a time vs a traditional shmup from start to end, game mechanics are gradually introduced as you progress, and you have an upgrade system to tune your attack and defense that you can modify for each stage.
Difficulty is relatively low, especially if you're just looking to clear the game. Experienced shmup players might have fun for a bit with score chasing, but ultimately may want to look for something more challenging.
After playing this, if you like the idea of using a shield/getting "hit" to attack, you can look into Takumi games (Giga Wing series, Mars Matrix) or RefleX (available on Steam/PC native). If you like playing separate stages, you can try Ginga Force or Revolver360 RE:ACTOR challenge mode, both games also available on Steam.
