Cultural Manifesto is celebrating its 12th anniversary on WFYI 🎉
The program originally began in 2012 as a weekly print column created by Kyle Long for NUVO Newsweekly. Like the radio show, the print version featured a unique mix of local and global music coverage, spotlighting both legendary artists and emerging voices.
Over the past 12 years, Long has recorded hundreds of hours of interviews with iconic musicians from around the world, while also documenting the work of Indiana's most important artists.
During that time, Long has uncovered, digitized and preserved hundreds of rare and endangered Indiana recordings — including Babyface's earliest known compositions, Duke Ellington's performance at the Indiana Jazz Festival, historic Slovenian polka recordings by the Haughville Slickers, live recordings made at the Indianapolis lesbian bar Labyris during the 1970s and 80s and many more.
Some of Cultural Manifesto’s notable interviews have included funk legend George Clinton; composers Meredith Monk and Anthony Davis; jazz legends Wynton Marsalis and Herbie Hancock; hip-hop pioneers Chuck D of Public Enemy and Big Boi of Outkast; rock icons Carlos Santana and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys; global music innovators Angélique Kidjo and Zakir Hussain; and political figures Bernie Sanders and Black Panther Party co-founder Bobby Seale.
But Long says his favorite interviews are often with Indiana artists, including Indianapolis' Hanna Benn, Gary's Jlin, Hobart's Omar Apollo, Marion's Lizz Vega, Bloomington's Dena El Saffar, Anderson’s Gary Burton and the late Hammond-born electronic music pioneer DJ Rashad.
