Last video of 2016 in the Assisted Migration series at the Chama, New Mexico site. The final "Elk style" control plantings of Alligator Juniper seeds are completed, along with a broad survey of the area, maps of current v. projected range shifts of this juniper (and Douglas-Fir and Ponderosa Pine), and a summary of the 4 kinds of experiments that call for volunteers to monitor this project in the decades ahead. Hotlinked table of contents:

00:10 Snapshots of all previous episodes in Alligator Juniper series
(Episode 7C has not yet been made)
01:06 Episode 7i begins (along Little Chamita Creek)
01:29 Map of current range of Alligator Juniper in Arizona and New Mexico
02:06 History of "Edward Sargent Wildlife Management Area" (Chama, NM)
02:42 View of the E-facing slope where first seed-planting today will occur
02:52 Topo map of all seed plantings in this area thus far
04:24 Connie uses tripod to film self explaining the seed actions today
05:06 Map of seed-collecting areas: Cienega Bypass Trail of Sandia Peak, Albuquerque
05:31 Connie continues explanation, with list of seed-collecting sites/dates
05:35 USFS map of current range v. 2030 range of Allig J in SW USA
06:16 After seeds separated from berries, Connie recounts sighting of coyote
07:13 Photo of berries and seeds in bowls; tastiness of Alligator J seeds
07:50 Comparison of branches and berries of 3 native juniper species
08:18 After planting seeds on E-facing slope, Connie videos the site and surrounds
11:48 Nearby area of dense grasses: too dense to plant Alligator seeds there
12:01 Back on S-facing slope: point to N-facing areas where planted seeds
16:44 Begin at 2 big Douglas-firs to follow elk trail up the N-facing steep slope
17:15 Nearing broad ridge summit: all Ponderosa Pines and Gambel Oak on top
17:42 Map of current v. 2030 projected range of Douglas-fir and Ponderosa Pine
18:07 Ponderosa Pine tree on broad ridge top that has several bark-peel scars
18:58 Return to "Home Tree" on N-facing slope; map of all seed plantings
19:45 Survey of N-facing "control" planting of Tree #1 seeds (110 just completed)
21:49 Survey of N-facing "control" planting of Tree #4 seeds (140 seeds to plant)
23:10 Huge shrubby growth of Juniper communis
23:35 Map of current J. communis range -- goes far north into Arctic & Iceland
23:44 Detailed look at the J. communis shrub
24:48 Where Tree #4 seeds were just planted and where remainder will go
25:31 Another look at J. communis shrub (only 2 berries on it)
26:48 Connie's final comments re 4 types of experimentation in this project:
(1) Germination/establishment differences bt Coyote and Elk style of seed planting
(2) Differences in slope and aspect preferences
(3) Habitat preferences
(4) Are there different success rates between the genotypes from 7 parent trees?
28:53 Encourages volunteers in future to continue assisted migration and monitor results of this project
