The Angus L. Macdonald Bridge, named after Nova Scotia's 12th premier (1933-1940), is nicknamed the 'Macdonald' or the 'Old' Bridge. It is the first suspension bridge to cross Halifax Harbour, opening in 1955. It spans 1.3km, has a clearance of 46.9m, carries between forty and fifty thousand cars a day, and has a speed limit of 50kmh. The toll is CAD$1.00 or 0.80 with a MacPass. 75% of all bridge tolls are paid with a MacPass. Except for buses, there is a 3200+kg weight restriction. There are three traffic lanes and two separated paths on each side—one for bicycles and the other for pedestrians. Bicycles and pedestrians cross free. The traffic lanes are reversible; two lanes are open from Dartmouth to Halifax from 12am-12pm and from 12pm-12am two lanes are open from Halifax to Dartmouth.
