In this video I show you how I set up my big rainforest tank. This tank is for my new 1.1 pair of Tribolonotus gracilis.

The "raw" tank and waterfall:
Under the waterfall I wanted to create a water basin. I sealed ~10cm high plasticpanes with aquarium silicone.
To model the waterfall you can use styrodur. Use a small gas burner to shape it how you want it to look.
Make a plan on how the waterfall shall look. Then clean the glass e.g. with alcohol) and use silicone as glue.
Press the styrodur against the glass, so that the silicone can stick.

Backwall:
I used different materials mixed with a latex binder, such as turf, coco-fiber ground and hackled mosses. I also mixed in two kinds of Xaxim, Xaxim from NZ and from South America. When choosing the Latex binder, be careful you take something similar to the one I used without components that can be dangerous for your animals!
At first mix the different dry ingredients.
Then add the latex binder and mix it well. I used a mixing ratio of 1:2.5.
A great alternative for the selfmade mixture is a "rainforest background modeling turf", offered by some terrarium stores.
The thickness should be between 4 and 10 mm. This needs about 2 weeks to dry completely.
Of course you can make a thicker layer too, though the setting of the binder will take longer then.
Let it dry for at least 2 weeks. (The process can be quickened by heating the background a little.)
I had not enough of the mixture to cover the whole background, so I used a small turf piece to cover the remaining glass.... :D

Interior setup:
These pressed bricks of coco-ground are awesome! I fully recommend them. It's incredible how much ground you get from only one of these bricks. You can really watch them grow, when you put them in water!
The drainage layer will prevent waterlogging. I always use small clay balls for this. Filter cotton or cotton fabric as interlayer prevents the ground to fall in the drainage layer.
I used mosses and ferns from outside and some bought tropical plants.
If you buy plants be sure that they are not chemically treated.
Hold them under running water for a few minutes to get rid of any chemicals.
Two weeks later, I added some more plants. :)


The plants are growing well and the setup is still growing (more hidings, barks and so on coming every few days :D).
