- Slip knot
- chain X number of chains (however long you want your project to be)
can be any number, but MUST be divisible by 5
- 4 Half Double Crochet COLOR 1
- On 5th Half Double Crochet, before completing it, change to COLOR 2, then complete
- 4 Half Double Crochet COLOR 2
- on 5th Half Double Crochet, before completing it, change to COLOR 1, then complete
Repeat until end of row
- Once at end of row, flip the project over and chain 1
- Use the same color you ended with to start new row
- Repeat above pattern for total of 3 rows
- After 3 rows of building the same color on top of itself, you should have alternating solid color squares

- Time to introduce COLOR 3
- Begin the new row with COLOR 1 if you ended the previous row with COLOR 2, or begin the new row with COLOR 3 if you ended the previous row with COLOR 1
- Repeat above pattern, but this time with COLOR 1 and COLOR 3
- After 3 rows, switch back to using COLOR 1 and COLOR 2, and repeat
